How to price a decking job

A deck is a frame with boards fixed on top. The calculator works out how many rows of boards cover the width, how many board lengths each row needs, and the joists underneath.

Boards and gaps

Each row is a board width plus a small gap for drainage and movement. Divide the deck width by that figure and round up to find the rows, then divide the length by the board length to find the pieces per row. A small waste allowance covers cuts.

Joists and footings

Joists run across the boards, spaced about 400 mm apart for many boards, but check the manufacturer's advice. Footings, posts and fixings vary a lot with the ground, so they are a lump sum you can change.

Check the rules

Decking more than 30 cm above the ground, or in some protected areas, may need planning permission. Check with your local council before you quote.
