How to price a fencing job

Fence quotes are driven by the length of the run. Work out how many panels you need, then the posts, gravel boards, concrete and fixings that go with them.

How many panels and posts?

A standard 6ft panel is 1.83 metres wide. Divide the fence length by the panel width and round up. A straight run needs one more post than panels, and each gate adds a post as well. Where you have corners or an uneven run, add a little extra for cuts and spare posts.

Gravel boards and postcrete

Gravel boards keep the bottom of a panel off wet ground and help it last longer. Most fence posts are set in postcrete or concrete, commonly a couple of bags each, depending on the hole and the post.

Before you start

Check who owns the boundary and agree the work with neighbours. Fences are generally limited to 2 metres in height, and 1 metre next to a road, without planning permission, so check locally. Remember to price in removing and disposing of any old fence.
